A rapidly growing group of children and adults are the innocent victims of an unspeakable crime. It is the kind of horror that many are afraid to speak out about, and even less know about. The fear of retaliation, blame, and a type of survivor's guilt are all common results of this crime.

  • What is it? The theft of a lifetime.

  • The thief? Autism.

Such a simple word, with such devastating consequences. This silent thief can steal speech, cognitive and physical abilities, social abilities, and too many other variable things to list here, all wrapped up in a confusing and emotional bundle.

Peripherally, it steals from the family as well. Peace of mind, parents previous dreams of their child's future, money, time, and sometimes marriages and families. Siblings can also suffer losses as well.

When it happens to families, many go into a stark survival mode, much like any victim of a violent crime might. Then the questions start.

  • Why my child?

  • Why my family?

  • Why me?

  • Could I have prevented this?

  • Did someone or something do this to my child?

  • Who can I blame?

All of these questions are then tossed into the pot, and combined with a liberal amount of tears, a huge helping of fears, a dash of denial, and a sprinkling of despair. After stewing for a long time, we are left with the unpalatable dish of autism force-fed to those unwilling victims. This recipe is served not only to the recipient, but to the entire family, their friends, and everyone they come into contact with. Dousing it with ketchup and choking it down doesn't make it any more appetizing.

After finally digesting the star reality of an autism diagnosis, families are usually left with some basic questions:

  • What is it?

  • What can I do about it?

  • What hope is there for my child?
